Pre-Congress Workshop: Green Housing, Green Jobs

Wednesday, June 2, 2010

Housing is one among many tools to support low-income households. While CHRA supports social housing and the provision of permanent affordable housing, we share the hopes of social and affordable housing tenants that a more prosperous and independent future is possible. Green jobs offer stable and prosperous careers while they contribute to a more sustainable future for families, communities and the environment.

Building maintenance, renovation and retrofits of social and affordable housing also provide opportunities to create green jobs. In addition, as new housing projects are designed and planned, they can incorporate design features that will provide for a more energy efficient and sustainable building.  These synergies should be embraced and pursued.

The objectives of this workshop are to  provide delegates with an understanding of what green jobs are, what work is being done to develop them in connection to the affordable housing and homelessness sector, and how we can advance green jobs development to the benefit of low-income Canadians in our communities. Professionals from non-profit housing organisations, governments, municipal councillors and staff, local economic development agencies, environmental organizations, local business associations, private builders, utilities, and unions would particularly benefit from participating in this workshop.
