National Housing Strategy
A strategic approach which engenders long-term, predictable and sustainable funding is required to prevent the demonstrated costs of inaction on housing and homelessness. A national housing strategy should target all components along the housing continuum, including homeownership, private rental housing, social housing, supportive housing and emergency housing.
It would not require a re-invention of the wheel; current investments represent the base from which the strategy could be consolidated. It should include high-level principles or outcomes, but not be overly prescriptive by ensuring flexibility for communities so that they can meet local needs.
A national housing strategy should be developed in consultation with all housing stakeholders, including the provinces/territories, municipalities, the private and non- profit housing sectors and Aboriginal communities.
