Homelessness
Conservative estimates of Canada’s homeless population range from a minimum of 150,000 up to 300,000. Numbers disguise the human stories of the families and individuals in communities all across Canada who experience homelessness every night. Without a home, families and individuals cannot hope to realize their full education and development potential. A job becomes very difficult to attain and maintain in the absence of a decent place to call home.
CHRA believes that just as people become homeless for different reasons – whether inadequate housing, inadequate income, health problems, violence, mental health challenges or substance use – the solutions must also incorporate different strategies. Many of CHRA’s members advance these very solutions every day and see how supportive and transitional housing can help previously homeless citizens address the root causes of their homelessness from the security of a safe and affordable home.
In 2009, CHRA released its Homelessness Policy Statement. This document outlines CHRA’s views on this issue, and sets out principles and recommendations for action.
