The issues that drive us and what we're doing about them

green housing

The greening of housing not only benefits the environment; it makes housing more affordable and creates green jobs.

CHRA believes that Canada’s social housing provides a key market for the quick expansion of green employment, as much of it is aging and has not been retrofitted.  CHRA also believes that these jobs, including the training for these jobs, should be linked to the low-income Canadians, including social housing tenants, who need those jobs the most.  In this way, the greening of Canada’s social housing can help to provide a pathway out of poverty.

In 2010, CHRA released its Green Housing, Green Jobs Policy Statement.  This document outlines CHRA’s views on this issue, and sets out principles and recommendations for action.
