Our Work

The issues that drive us and what we're doing about them

advocacy

Flowing from our policy positions, CHRA advocates on behalf of its members to compel decision-makers to make the kinds of choices that will lead to a future where all Canadians can access and afford the type of housing they need.

CHRA’s leadership regularly engages with decision-makers and undertakes formal advocacy activities, such as appearing before Parliamentary committees and forwarding budget submissions.

Some examples of CHRA's successful advocacy campaigns:

  • CHRA advocated over many years to have mortgage insurance premiums waived for affordable housing. In 2005, it paid off and our requests were granted. CHRA then asked CMHC to extend these savings to all non-profit housing projects and, in the same year, CMHC granted this request. One member received enough savings from this change to subsidize an extra unit in a 23-unit development.
  • CHRA successfully advocated for an amendment to the budget (Bill C-48) that added $1.6 billion for housing and $100 million in energy retrofits for low-income housing
  • CHRA and the National Aboriginal Housing Association successfully advocated for a $1.2 billion boost to aboriginal housing programs
