2010 chra award recipients
Regent Park Revitalization Project (Toronto Community Housing)
Robert Hale Jr. Memorial Award
This award was established in 1990 as a memorial to Robert Hale Jr., to encourage emulation of the outstanding contribution he made to housing improvement in Canada.
This award is dedicated to recognizing an individual or organization´s outstanding contribution to improvement in the habitability of existing housing through the development, enhancement, improvement and/or implementation of rehabilitation or maintenance and occupancy standards. Toronto Community Housing Corporation´s (TCHC) Regent Park Revitalization is the embodiment of all these qualities. For their vision, imagination and fortitude, CHRA is delighted to award TCHC with this important award.
CHRA celebrates the fact that work like the revitalization of Regent Park benefits all residents of the city and region, whether they are direct service recipients or local residents who will enjoy living in a place where the most vulnerable citizens are cared for and supported. CHRA believes that housing for all brings greater health, happiness and prosperity to all, and this belief is embodied in TCHC´s work not just in this project but in the work they have done to house low income families and individuals across Toronto.
We would also like to acknowledge the impressive partnerships TCHC has had with three levels of government: the City of Toronto, the Province of Ontario and the Government of Canada. It is clear that a project of this magnitude and importance could not succeed without a commitment to collaboration and support among all four organizations. We commend this effort and believe that this project and the partnership underlying it is a model for Canadian and international cities.
Graham Emslie Award
This award was established in 1988 to honour Graham Emslie, a former CHRA president.
The Graham Emslie Award is granted to a nominee who has demonstrated an outstanding contribution in the field of housing and community development. The winner is chosen on the basis of national contributions or for specific, local achievements. The winner of the Graham Emslie Award for 2010 is Jocelyn Greene of Stella Burry Community Services.
This award honours Jocelyn Greene´s outstanding work not just as Executive Director for Stella Burry Community Services, but also for her 30 years of service and leadership in the St. John´s community and across the country. Ms. Greene´s work is outstanding for the wide-range of initiatives she has undertaken which straddle affordable and supportive housing development and policy, social enterprise and employment training, education, mental health, addictions, and community development. Under Jocelyn Greene´s leadership, Stella Burry Community Services has become a trailblazer, clearing barriers and obstacles that prevent all citizens from engaging in their community. CHRA celebrates the fact that work like hers is a model for communities across Canada.
Thank you for the important contributions you continue to make to Canadians in need of housing assistance!
International Award
This award was established in 1998 to highlight the involvement of CHRA and its members at the international level.
CHRA´s International Award recognizes a person or an organization that has made an outstanding contribution towards international understanding and professional exchange within the affordable housing community development field.
This year, we are very pleased to recognize Kurt Creager as the recipient of CHRA´s International Award for his exceptional work in advancing international collaboration and dialogue between affordable housing leaders in Canada, the United States, the United Kingdom and in other developed and developing countries.
In particular, we would like to recognize the significant contribution Mr Creager has made to the Tri-Country process and the strong bonds that he has built between the National Association of Housing and Redevelopment Officials in the U.S. and CHRA. In addition, his willingness to share his innovative affordable housing solutions beyond American borders is very much appreciated by his international colleagues.
