New Brunswick Auditor General Finds Province’s Social Housing at Risk with Federal Government Funding Ending – CHRA asks: Will other provinces be equally hard hit?
The Office of the Auditor General of New Brunswick recently examined the Province’s social housing stock in order to assess whether it can be maintained as the funding provided by CMHC to support social housing is expiring.
On January 31, 2012, the Federation of Canadian Municipalities (FCM) released The Housing Market and Canada's Economic Recovery, which calls on the federal government to support the expansion of the stagnant rental housing market. Specific recommendations include providing low-interest loans to finance new rental construction, reforming the tax system to prevent the demolition of existing rental housing and providing incentives to improve energy efficiency in order to lower rental costs.
CMHC’s mortgage loan insurance flexibilities which allow loan-to-value ratios of up to 95% for new affordable multi-unit housing loans has been extended until December 13, 2013.
