Across the globe, 2010 was the wettest year in recorded history, and flooding to date in 2011 suggests this trend is not likely to subside anytime soon. Housing providers are facing flooded basements, ponding, mould, and property damage, and are at an increased risk of West Nile virus and other waterborne illnesses. These issues bring with them significant health and economic impacts. Reducing the effects of runoff and non-point source pollution entering lakes and rivers via storm sewers can go a long ways towards mitigating these impacts. Solutions reduce contamination and/or divert rainwater into the soil where it can be filtered naturally and recharge our precious groundwater aquifers. Ensuring that this work does not result in wet basements is part of the package.
This webinar will provide housing providers with practical tips and tools to manage stormwater runoff from their buildings including how to:
- Capture and release rain more slowly. This will reduce the volume entering the stormwater system
- Allow more rain to soak into the ground by installing rain gardens and increasing permeable areas.
- Avoid polluting activities (leaving pet waste, cigarette butts, spreading lawn fertilizer, de-icing salts, driveway sealing and carwashing http://slowrain.ca/pages/KeepItClean.php)
